Ronson Rocks

Ronson Rocks Festival

Ronson Rocks was a celebration of music and the artistic contribution of the legendary musician, guitarist, arranger and producer, Mick Ronson.  Mick lived on Greatfield for many years and launched his music career from the estate.  He is the estate’s ‘famous son’.  He defined the sound of his era and worked alongside David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars, Lou Reed, Morrissey and many others.  Mick’s sister Maggi and daughter Lisa are also musicians and we were very lucky to have Maggi performing at the festival.

The idea behind the festival was to tell more people about Greatfield Big Local, celebrate the local celebrity and get people involved in improving their area.  A 2 day training course called Rock Behind The Roll was attended by local residents to learn the skills needed to put on this event and future events in the area. Ideas were also explored about including Mick Ronson in designs for Greatfield.

Everyone worked really hard to create the best possible festival including booking bands, arranging for facilities – bins, toilets and bar – and organising for activities for children and information stands.

Despite the rain, the festival was enjoyed by many including the organisers who were surveyed afterwards.  98% of volunteers said they enjoyed the event, 99% enjoyed the music, 75% learned something new about Mick Ronson, the bands, GBL or other community projects, 99% said they would come to future GBL events. Some quotes from the volunteers included: “Well worth the hard work I put in” , “ A great day, enjoyed it, was very tired but loved it”, “excited and well good”, “Absolutely brilliant, great line up.  I couldn’t be there, but I was proud to help out towards the music festival.”
