Brides and Grooms

Residents brought in their wedding wardrobes including some beautiful dresses.  Photos of their weddings stimulated discussion.  One couple was actually celebrating their golden wedding during the event which made it extra special.

Satellite Dish of Pictures

A satellite dish of pictures was created as a metaphor for communication in a  therapeutic art session where residents wrote their problems colourfully on a card on the dish.  This helped people by naming their problems and giving them a place to be aired.

Covid Happiness Bags

In April 2020, Happiness Bags were created and delivered to people throughout Greatfield.  Approximately 20 adults' and children's activity bags were delivered per week.

People were delighted to receive these as they gave them something to do, but more importantly, allowed a little social interaction in those isolating times.  Talking to people during the deliveries revealed that there were families with children with additional needs leading to further action to help them.  The visits also identified that residents in Falcon and Stockwell Roads were not accessing necessary services.

Issuing the bags also fostered good relationships with GBL.  Many said they thought the church was providing them so it was a marketing opportunity to showcase the community centres.

Did you get a Happiness Bag?  How did it change your experience of lockdown?

Kit Car

The Green Power Education Trust's main aim is to advance education in the subjects of sustainable engineering and technology for young people. Big Local became aware of the Trust through local Police who requested support for a Kit Car project to act as a positive diversionary activity for local young people following a spate of Anti-Social Behaviour reports on the Greatfield Estate.   Local young people, aged 11-16, were recruited through schools, Rotary Youth Club, Greatfield Hub Youth Project and through existing relationships, to build a Green Power kit car supported by volunteers, and race it during the Hull City of Culture (2017) year.  Between 15 and 25 young people were involved who completed an accredited programme (Industrial Cadets; Silver Level) to learn new skills and gain confidence. The secondary aim was to foster improved relationships between the Police and local young people.

Did you help make this car?  Did you race it?

The storage container arrived and was decorated.

Did you see it arrive?  Did you help decorate it?
